The Bond Market Just Decided $100 Oil Is Deflationary. That Rewrites the April 29 BoC.

The Brief

The S&P 500 closed up for a seventh straight session, the longest streak since October 2025, on a day WTI crude rose roughly 6% back toward $100, software shares sold off inside the rally, and Iran was accusing the U.S. of ceasefire violations.
The 10-year Treasury yield fell 1.2% on a day oil moved up sharply. That correlation had not held for six weeks. For the entire war, oil up had meant yields up. Today it inverted.
The Russell 2000 surged nearly 3%, leading every major U.S. index. Small caps and rate-sensitives are not the leadership you get when the market is pricing higher oil as inflationary. They are the leadership you get when the market is pricing rate cuts back onto the table.
The bond market just repriced the entire war from inflation event to growth scare. The Thursday tape says fixed income disagrees in size with the stagflation framework every HDQ desk built this morning.
The TSX closed roughly flat while the S&P extended its streak. That divergence is the practical cost of being overweight the regime that ended today. Canadian portfolios are positioned for a stagflation trade the market just stopped pricing.
