The 2026 RRSP dollar limit is $33,810, up $1,320 from $32,490 in 2025 and 51% above the $22,450 limit of 2011. Fidelity Canada calculates that earning the full limit takes $187,833 of earned income in the prior year, because the annual room is 18% of earned income up to the dollar cap.
The planning year for most registered accounts closes on December 31, which is 71 days from today. RRSP contributions that count toward the 2026 tax year have a later date: Monday, March 1, 2027, according to Fidelity Canada.
How the Limit Has Moved Since 2011
The RRSP dollar limit has risen in every annual step since 2011, from $22,450 to $33,810, and 26% of that gain arrived in just two years. That series uses the annual limits published by Sun Life, with the 2026 figure confirmed by Advisor.ca and Fidelity Canada.
The limit rose in every annual step shown. The 2022 and 2023 increases of $1,380 and $1,570 were the two largest, and the 2026 increase of $1,320 was the third largest.
The dollar limit is indexed to growth in the average wage under the Income Tax Act. The 2022 and 2023 steps of $1,380 and $1,570 added $2,950 between them, or 26% of the $11,360 total increase since 2011.
The income needed to fill the room has climbed with it. In 2011 the full $22,450 required about $124,700 of earned income, an HDQ calculation at 18%. For 2026 the figure is $187,833, a rise of roughly $63,100. Members of registered pension plans see the limit reduced by their pension adjustment, so the practical ceiling is lower for many employees.
Dividend Pay Does Not Create RRSP Room
RRSP room accrues on earned income, which includes salary and business income but not dividends. An owner of a Canadian-controlled private corporation who is paid entirely in dividends adds no RRSP room, however large the corporation is.
Earned income in 2026 sets the room available for 2027, so the salary and dividend mix settled before December 31 determines the starting point for next year. That mix now sits alongside a new corporate tax measure.
On September 15, 2026, the federal government announced the Productivity Mega Deduction, which allows immediate expensing of a wide range of depreciable property acquired on or after that date, with no expiry, according to BDO. Newly eligible assets include computer equipment, vehicles, aircraft, mining property and pipelines. The government estimates the measure lowers the general federal marginal effective tax rate on new investment to 6.4%.
For an incorporated owner, a larger first-year deduction reduces corporate taxable income in the year of purchase. It does not create personal earned income, so it sits beside the salary question rather than replacing it.
The December 31 Accounts: TFSA, FHSA and RESP
The TFSA limit is $7,000 for 2026, which brings cumulative room to $109,000 for someone eligible since 2009 who has never contributed, according to CIBC Wood Gundy. TFSA contributions earn no deduction, and unused room carries forward.
The FHSA annual limit is $8,000 with a lifetime limit of $40,000, and unused room carries forward. An account opened in 2024 has total room of $24,000, according to CIBC Wood Gundy. FHSA contributions are deductible, so a contribution made by December 31 lowers 2026 taxable income, which is a different timing from an RRSP contribution made in March 2027 and claimed on the same return.
RESP contributions of $2,500 attract the 20% Canada Education Savings Grant of $500 for a beneficiary, and unused grant room allows up to $1,000 a year from $5,000 of contributions. The lifetime grant maximum is $7,200 per child, per CIBC Wood Gundy.
Segmenting the Calendar
The same two dates apply differently by client type. A salaried accumulator in a high bracket faces the March 1, 2027 RRSP date, while a first-time buyer saving through an FHSA faces December 31. A family with a young beneficiary faces the RESP grant date on December 31, and an owner-manager faces the salary and dividend decision before year end.
Individuals turning 71 in 2026 face the firmest date of all. CIBC Wood Gundy notes that the RRSP must be converted to a RRIF by December 31, 2026, with a final RRSP contribution permitted by the same date. No minimum RRIF withdrawal applies in the conversion year, and minimums begin the following year.
